Key Points

  • It’s legal to own psychedelic mushrooms in Oregon for personal use, but you can’t grow, buy, or sell them.
  • Psilocybin service centers are the only way to legally acquire mushrooms if you sign up for an administrative session.
  • In the future, restrictions on acquisition, usage, and kinds of products will hopefully relax, but when that will be is unknown.

For drug policy, Oregon is a state that’s always been ahead of the rest of the nation. Oregon decriminalized cannabis all the way back in 1973, half a century before any other state would even consider it.

And in 2020, they made history again with Ballot 109. Ballot 109 not only decriminalized magic mushrooms in Oregon like some cities have, but also legalized supervised medical use at licensed service centers.

But that’s not the whole story. Let’s take a look at the details.

Are Psychedelic Mushrooms Legal in Oregon?

Short answer? Yes.

Long answer? Kind of.

Mushrooms are decriminalized, but there are still some major restrictions. There are no equivalent facilities to cannabis dispensaries for psychedelic mushrooms in Oregon. While people older than 21 won’t be arrested or fined for owning their own mushrooms for personal use, they can’t legally grow, buy, or sell magic mushrooms or psilocybin-containing products outside of licensed “psilocybin service centers.”

And while these psilocybin service centers offer supervised psychedelic experiences, they can only use Psilocybe cubensis, which isn’t as potent as other psilocybin-containing species like Psilocybe natalensis. They also require a license to offer these services.

How Oregon’s Psilocybin Service Centers Work

Unlike cannabis, there is no “shroom card” you need to experience psychedelic mushrooms in Oregon. You don’t even need to be an Oregon resident; out-of-state visitors can go to one of these centers.

However, before they actually have a guided experience (known as an “administrative session”), they need to attend a preparation session. They’ll meet with a licensed facilitator who will ask questions to help them decide if this experience is best for them. Every center that uses magic mushrooms in Oregon operates a little differently, so eligibility for administration is up to the discretion of the facilitator.

If the facilitator and client agree that a session is the right course of action, that’s where the services become more tailored. For example, the client might want an “authorized client support person” with them, who is typically a trusted friend or family member.

The client will also need to purchase mushrooms at the center before the session. This is the only way to legally buy psychedelic mushrooms in Oregon. These mushrooms are only for use in the facility and cannot be taken with you after the session is over.

What the session itself is like entirely depends on the center and facilitator. Magic mushrooms are administered and effects begin in a calm, cozy setting. The facilitator provides support and guidance while the client goes through their experience. With the facilitator present (as well as an authorized client support person, if applicable), the dose will be exact, the chances of a bad trip are minimized, and any medical interactions (such as with lithium and SSRIs) can be identified and treated ASAP.

After the effects end and the client “comes down,” the facilitator and client will debrief. They’ll discuss how to integrate any lessons and revelations the client may have come to into their life, ensuring that this experience is one that they’ll take with them for the rest of their lives.

Who These Services Are For

Taking psychedelic mushrooms in Oregon won’t be for everyone. In fact, these psychedelic service centers opened up with a very specific demographic in mind: those struggling with mental health.

For centuries, people have pointed to psychedelics as a powerful tool for personal, mental, and spiritual development. In the past few decades, the focus has drifted towards integrating psychedelics into therapy and mental health treatment. The most research has been on psychedelic treatment for trauma and PTSD, but these centers invite anyone struggling with depression, anxiety, and other mental health struggles to try psychedelic mushrooms in Oregon.

We’ll note, however, that research is still ongoing on the efficacy of these treatments. This is a bold new frontier that we’re only just starting to explore. Taking magic mushrooms in Oregon will not cure mental illness, but psilocybin service centers believe it can help.

What the Future of Psychedelic Mushrooms in Oregon Looks Like

While magic mushrooms are decriminalized now, this isn’t the end of the fight for fully legal psilocybin use. There are a bunch of things we can expect in the near future.

1. New products

Right now, psilocybin service centers exclusively sell products made with the dried mushrooms of P. cubensis strains. These include whole mushrooms, teas, capsules, and extracts. However, in August 2024, the first psilocybin edible gummy product was approved.

There are also native magic mushrooms in Oregon from the P. azurescens species that remain illegal to use at these service centers. As use of psychedelic mushrooms in Oregon becomes more normalized, more species may be added to the list of approved psilocybin-containing mushroom strains.

2. Home cultivation rights

Although it’s legal to own magic mushrooms and you can buy spore products like mushroom spore syringes and mushroom spore swabs, it’s not legal to grow it outside of a service center. Personal cultivation is currently legal in Colorado, so it’s likely only a matter of time before it’s legalized in Oregon.

3. Recreational access

Right now, psilocybin is kind of treated like an unofficial form of mental health treatment. However, as anybody who has ever been to a music festival will tell you, it’s primarily used recreationally. While we may never have dedicated “mushroom dispensaries,” there’s a good chance that one day, there will be a way to buy psychedelic mushrooms in Oregon outside of psilocybin service centers.

4. Medical treatment integration

Advocacy for integrating psychedelics into mental health treatment is only growing, especially from people who work at psilocybin service centers. But what happens when “clients” of service centers become “patients”? Will it be covered by insurance? Will it require a prescription?

The formalization of psychedelics as a valid form of mental health treatment has yet to happen, and we still don’t know what the ramifications of it will be. But considering the trailblazing history of cannabis and magic mushrooms in Oregon, they’ll probably be the first ones to see.
