Each state and US territory has a different legal scenario with sets of options when it comes to the sale of psychedelic mushroom items in stores. 

While it is illegal in most states, here are all of your best options for legally buying shroom-related products in your location both in-person or online.

🍄 Alabama

Alabama is very restrictive when it comes to shrooms and ways to acquire them. Legislation in AL deems Psilocybe mushrooms illegal to own, consume, cultivate, etc. However, such mushroom spores are 100% available for sale in Alabama and are your best option by far. In fact, they’re pretty much your only option. You may find Amanita Muscaria gummies as well, but those are quite different from psilocybin-containing mushrooms.

  • Forage: These mushrooms may be naturally occurring in Alabama. Typically, they’d be growing near cow pastures where dung patties are present, or in manure-based landscaping.

🍄 Alaska

Options to buy these kinds of mushrooms legally in Alaska are very limited, and we’d advise avoiding any shrooms on the “black market” as strains can be dangerous, and these activities are highly illegal. In Alaska, possessing mushrooms is a felony, and so looking to buy them legally is useless for now. Mushroom spores, on the other hand, are 100% legal for sale in Alaska.

House Bill 2486 would appropriate $30 million from the state’s budget for psilocybin research grants and to establish a psilocybin research advisory council. In other words, big changes are coming to Arizona’s shroom landscape. 

While there are currently no dispensaries or guided therapy centers in AZ, you can still buy spores 100% legally. Be patient, Arizona residents!

🍄 Arkansas

Arkansas is very conservative when it comes to these mushrooms and ways to acquire them, similar to their approach to legal cannabis. 

Whereas other decriminalized states may have guided therapy centers or gift-dispensaries, options are quite limited in AR due to restrictive legislation. However, shroom spores are still 100% available for sale in Arkansas, and are by far your best choice here.

Folks in Arkansas will not find many shroom products near them, aside from Amanita products which are completely different and don’t contain any psilocybin.

  • Forage: Arkansas has the right climate for the mushrooms to grow, especially in moist forests or in cow pastures where dung is common. However, foraging them is labor intensive and illegal once picked. Stick with mushroom spores if you are looking for shrooms in AR.

🍄 California

Though the legislation around Psilocybin is very confusing in California, the big picture is that shrooms are becoming more accepted, available, and are an “extremely low priority” in the eyes of the law. 

In 6 CA cities (Oakland, Santa Cruz, Arcata, Berkeley, Eureka, and San Francisco), psychedelic mushrooms have been completely decriminalized. So, the best purchasing options exist in those locations. Since May 2023, shroom spores are legal for purchase in California as well.

  • Dispensaries: Visit cannabis stores in Oakland, San Francisco, Santa Cruz and look for mushroom offerings. While they cannot legally sell them to you, you can purchase a legal item and have the mushrooms gifted to you.
  • Psilocybin Guided Therapy Centers: Some people may get lucky applying to be a part of a research trial at many of California’s universities. UC Berkeley has a whole Psychedelics Department, for example!

🍄 Colorado

Colorado is one of two states that have completely decriminalized Psilocybin Mushrooms, but it still isn’t legal for recreational sale in shroom-specific dispensaries. You may have luck with shroom “gifts” at cannabis dispensaries though. Your safest bet, however, is to try a guided therapy center. Or, if you don’t want to spend too much, consider buying mushroom spores, which are 100% legal and available in CO.

  • Dispensaries: Technically, there are no dispos in Colorado. They are still illegal for recreational sale. However, many cannabis stores may be “gifting” mushrooms in the form of chocolate bars, powders, etc.

🍄 Connecticut

Connecticut, in May 2023, voted to decriminalize psilocybin, but it has not yet been enacted. Nothing is available yet, so take a look at Colorado’s section to see what a decriminalized consumer landscape looks like. 

Though options still are very scarce, there are still some ways to buy shroom products in CT. Also, Connecticut residents looking for shrooms near them may have luck going to MA, where a few cities have decriminalized psychedelic mushrooms. CT is a small state, don’t be afraid to drive a few hours in your search! If you’re lazy, like me, you’ll have better luck just buying spores.

🍄 Delaware

Delaware is pretty sleepy when it comes to legislation about this product. While legislation is slowly moving forward to decriminalize psilocybin, your options are very limited in Delaware. In fact, your own option really is to buy microscopy spores for research. Shrooms will be hard to find near you in DE. Washington D.C. is only a few hours away, where shrooms are decriminalized. You could try that route as well.

🍄 Florida

Florida, like Alabama, is very conservative when it comes to psilocybin legislation. Many bills were introduced, but squandered for a variety of reasons. As a result, you can only buy mushroom spores right now in FL. Finding shrooms in Florida is tough, but spores and or foraging will service your needs with a bit of effort.

  • Forage: There are many varieties of mushrooms that can be found growing naturally in Florida. The climate is very humid and hot, and there is no shortage of cow pastures. Target those areas for a higher likelihood of success.

🍄 Georgia

Georgia is in a sort of “discovery phase” about research and various legislative proposals in this space. Right now, you have basically zero options in the state of Georgia, sadly. Not even the spores of Psilocybin mushrooms can be purchased in GA. Sorry Georgians, but it looks like you’ll have to forage or go to a state where legislation is different.

🍄 Hawaii

Hawaii is actively looking into decriminalization, but options are still relatively scarce. Your best avenue here is by buying spores or foraging for them yourself. Or, try ordering some PES Hawaiian Spores! Be patient Hawaiians, legislation is slowly brewing!

🍄 Idaho

Like Georgia, there are essentially no options in the state of Idaho when it comes to buying shrooms. Finding them in Idaho is going to be incredibly difficult, assuming you are attempting to do so legally. However, neighboring states like Washington, Oregon, and California have much less restrictive laws.

🍄 Illinois

Legislation is beginning to change in Illinois, but there’s a lot of work to be done before shroom products are fully available, either in dispensaries or guided therapy centers. For now, your best option is buying spores. Be patient, however, as it seems like the tides are shifting in IL as it pertains to finding shrooms near you. Illinois was relatively quick with Cannabis, let’s see if the same will be true with psilocybin-containing mushrooms.

🍄 Indiana

Indiana is not very shroom-friendly, and hasn’t made much of an effort to change in that regard. As a result, buying shroom products in Indiana is essentially limited to spores. However, neighboring states like Michigan and Illinois are a bit ahead of Indiana in this regard. If you want to find shrooms near you, those states may present your best options in due time.

🍄 Iowa

Pending legislation would remove psilocybin and psilocyn from Schedule I of Iowa’s state controlled substances act. Until that bill and much more legislation passes, however, spores are your only path to enjoy shroom products in Iowa. Iowa is slowly working on solutions, however. Only time will tell. For now, spores are by far your best bet.

🍄 Kansas

Your options are limited to just spores in Kansas. However, if passed, the “Legalized Homegrown Mushroom Act of 2022,” as the new bill has been named, would decriminalize the cultivation and possession of less than 50g of psilocybin or psilocin. However, legislation keeps failing in this conservative state, so don’t expect shrooms to suddenly show up near you in Kansas. Shroom spores are 100% legal in KS, however.

Like Indiana, not much is happening on this front in Kentucky, and options to buy them are completely limited to spores. Finding shrooms in surrounding states won’t be of much use either, as KY’s neighbors have similar regulations.

🍄 Louisiana

Note: Possession of Psilocybe mushrooms is illegal in Louisiana, this information is for educational value only. 

In Louisiana, you can only buy shroom spores. Unlike Colorado or Oregon, Louisiana has not decriminalized mushrooms and hasn’t yet considered legalizing psychedelic therapy centers. However, due to a humid climate in the state, you may be able to find them growing naturally. To reiterate, shrooms won’t be showing up near you in Louisiana anytime soon. Mushroom spores are by far your best bet. Frankly, they’re not a bad option at all.

Maine is lagging behind the rest of New England in ways to buy shrooms. There are no state counties that have decriminalized the mushrooms, and there is no way to get them through licensed therapy centers. So, your best option for buying shrooms in Maine is buying spores.

🍄 Massachusetts

For most of Massachusetts, options are limited to spores. However, in Easthampton, Somerville, Northampton, Salem, and Cambridge, you can buy mushroom spores, try out cannabis dispensaries that may give shroom-based products as “freebie” gifts, or look into guided therapy with research institutions.

  • Dispensaries: There are technically no dispos in Massachusetts. However, in Somerville, Northampton, Salem, and Cambridge, you may try your luck to see if cannabis dispensaries will give you mushrooms as a “gift.” Its sale is still illegal, even in those towns, but many places are happy to gift if you ask.

You have a few options to buy shroom-related products in Michigan. Most notably, consumers can buy mushroom spores online or in-person. Additionally, consumers may have some luck in the cities of Detroit & Ann Arbor, though unlikely. For people that want shrooms NOW, there are tons of options to drive and grab some spores.

According to Psychedelic Alpha, “Bill A00114 would legalize ‘adult possession and use of certain natural plant or fungus-based hallucinogens,’ specifically psilocybin, psilocin, DMT, ibogaine, and mescaline (except from peyote), and would grant ‘certain protections for individuals lawfully using such hallucinogens.’” 

Until that passes, options are just as limited as they’ve always been. You can buy mushroom spores, in-person or online.

🍄 Washington 

In Washington, you have a few options to get your hands on shroom-related products. In Seattle, they are fully decriminalized, meaning that many people may have access to psychedelic-assisted therapy centers and gifted-mushrooms in the city’s limits. For the rest of the state, purchasing spores is essentially your only option.

Remember, this information is for educational purposes only, and selling or possessing these mushrooms can get you in serious legal trouble on both a state & federal level.

  • Dispensaries: Technically, there are no dispos in Washington. They are still illegal. However, many cannabis stores in Seattle may be “gifting” mushrooms in the form of chocolate bars, powders, etc. While they do exist, you should note that many of the products can be impure or dangerous, as they are mostly unregulated for sale.

DC has completely decriminalized Psilocybin mushrooms. However, it still isn’t legal for recreational sale. 

You may have luck with “gifts” at dispensaries, or through finding these products as part of clinical trials and budding therapy centers. Shroom spores are a fantastic option in DC as well.

  • Dispensaries: Technically, there are no dispos in Washington D.C. That is illegal.
